As kids we would have to try to bite the treacle scones (they were covered in the stuff) that were hung up in the kitchen as a Halloween party game. Preheat the oven to 200C/180Fan/400F. Pet dogs allowed on the premises, though were not sure if they get a cup of tea to slurp. Its not so much a breakfast as a smash-to-smithereens-fast. The hotel serves them at teatime.
You dont have to knead them like bread, just bring the dough together, tip it out and roll it. I imagine that would work with these too. Do not overmix. Central Hotel, Gordon Street; (041) 221 9680.

Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds or until the treacle has become more liquid. Place the sieved flour, salt, sugar and Ground Ginger into a large bowl. Free-range Scottish eggs and locally sourced ingredients are used, and the scones are served with butter and house-made raspberry jam. There was something really wonderful about the smell of them just after they were pulled out of the oven, to be followed by the agonising wait before we were allowed to eat any of them.
