Flows in the Oak are slightly high with 1 2 ft of stained visibility. Those smaller tribs will drop and clear and warm up sooner then the Oak. After unseasonably warm temps thru yesterday and wind, the forecast thru this end part of the week is cooler with rain or showers tonight going over to snow showers tomorrow. Flows in the Oak are one click less then medium or what you might call somewhere in between moderate and medium. Since its still busy with plenty of Kings around, anglers need to carefully spot the places where the browns are shadowing the Kings. Mid Mar 2022 Oak Orchard. Proceeding upstream thru the Oak downstream frog water areas the reports are quieter but I suspect guys are into a decent skein bite. Flogging one spot like at the Archers Club may not yield more then off and on action. Forecast temps in the mid 40sF for this mid week period and chance of off and on rain showers. Aiden also won the Youth Division with that salmon. Flows in the Oak have retreated some to slightly high and slightly stained. Not big numbers of steelhead but a few that likely came in on the previous higher flows we had and are a good portent to upcoming steelhead action in the more traditional February or March timeframe. You wouldnt mind see flows a little higher in the Oak for best steelhead chances, but the risk there is to be careful what you wish for. Here we go on a nice warm up again for more seasonal spring like temps this week. No doubt there are some guys out quietly getting into some browns and steelhead in the smaller tribs. Through Operation Injured Soldiers, Captains Mike Grager, Mike Lavender and Bob Eder took 12 wounded veterans fishing and enjoyed 2 days on Lake Ontario. Fishing pressure is over-the-all pretty light and manageable. This latest rise in flows and continued cool down should kick off better brown trout migrations in the Oak setting up good drifting chances into November and maybe into December with reasonable weather hanging in. This will go down as a trip of a lifetime for them as well as for us. All the trib flows are on the rise and going off color. Its not likely to freeze back up significantly even with cold temps. A few more guys out on the Oak today than the past weekend, but still not all that much fishing pressure. In subsequent years ahead when runs are made up of multiple year classes of fish the returns and fishing prospects could be even better! Johnson Creek had a nice bump in flows and got stained and guys reported some salmon on the move there. Still light fishing pressure yet the regulars who are getting out there are getting their hookups like nearer the dam. Conditions were ideal with stained river water and dirty near shore Lake waters on northwest winds for cover for the fish to disperse. Look for those smaller waterways to open back up again slowly like thru the end of this week or weekend. Looks like a good head of turbine water with overflow levels diminished. As of today flows were high consisting of something close to wide open turbine flows and a little bit of overflow water. In early November and early December, all Lake Ontario tributaries (Eighteenmile, Johnson, Oak Orchard, Sandy and Salmon Creeks) will see higher flows. Any below freezing night could make for some skim ice or chunky flows in an exposed waterway like Sandy. Evereything in the Oak remains open and fishable. Flows are mod or almost med and mostly clear. Bass fishing in Sodus has been excellent. Expect mod to med, but just less then med mostly clear flows in the Oak. Water temps are moving thru the mid and into the high 30s F and look for 40F ish+ as the weather warms. Fridays big east wind iced the inside waters where mature kings were being caught from 120 feet of water and in prior to the wind. Its a difficult forecast to predict what may happen to trib conditions but any over-the-all colder temps that will come along with the icing or snow should continue the dropping and clearing trend in the waterways to mod in the Oak and low in the smaller waterways. With no real winter to come out of and trib and open lake water temps all on the warmer side, who knows for sure how the steelhead gods will play things out over the next couple months?!
